Camille Giroud, originally from Switzerland, married in 1965 Miss Deschamps, the daughter of a historic family of coopers and merchants in Beaune. Camille took over a small family trading house which he renamed Maison Giroud Deschamps. Unlike many other négociants, Camille Giroud only bought musts and finished wines. He relied on his talent as a winemaker to establish the reputation of the house. The wines that went down into the cellar to stay there for many years, even decades, had both body and strength.
In the 1950s, Lucien, Camille's youngest son, took over the House after his father's death. The family tradition remained unchanged. Indeed, Lucien only purchased wines that his educated palate judged not only good for aging, but with extra soul to face time. Otherwise, he refused them. Lucien's motto: "Always a buyer, never a buyer".
Just north of Beaune, the Savigny-lès-Beaune appellation produces mostly red wines known for their aromas of red fruits (cherry, raspberry) and black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), of flowers (violet), with sometimes hints of licorice. Notes of undergrowth, spices and more animal notes frequently appear with age, while firm tannins structure the wine.
