Domaine Méo-Camuzet - Fixin 1er Cru "Clos du Chapitre" 2021
A straightforward wine, with a beautiful minerality. It offers a deep color and it pleases with its black fruit aromas and subtle, fresh bouquet. The slight severity sometimes felt at the beginning of the wine's life quickly fades, giving way to great elegance.
It is aged in 40% new barrels. Vinification is cautious, with the natural acidity of the plot taking care of the extraction. It is made from fairly old vines, around 50 years old. Clos du Chapitre, once owned by the bishopric of Langres, lies at the heart of the village of Fixin, below Clos de la Perrière, famous for its grape harvesting facility built by the Cîteaux monks. In the upper part, the slopes are still quite steep and the rows of vines are planted in a north-south direction to limit erosion. It's a charming place, but you soon realize that growing vines here is not easy.
For more than four centuries the Méo family has been dedicated to growing vines and making wine. In 1981, Domaine Camuzet became Méo-Camuzet and the first wines bottled under this name are those of the 1983 vintage.
In 1984, Jean Méo proposed to his son Jean-Nicolas to take over the reins of the Domaine. At just 20 years old, he was not prepared to become a winemaker. But after 8 days of reflection, he took on the challenge. He finished his studies (not without a detour to the University of Burgundy to study oenology), took a trip to the USA and returned to live in Vosne-Romanée in 1989. He immersed himself in the domaine, the vines, and the winemaking process with his father as a mentor, of course, but also with Henri Jayer who, having retired, nevertheless agreed to share his technical know-how and his art of winemaking. Christian Faurois, son and nephew of other historical tenant farmers of the domaine, taught him everything he needed to know about the vineyard and transmitted to him his passion for the land.
Since 2008, Jean-Nicolas has been cultivating the 17 hectares of vines planted on the estate. Today, the Méo-Camuzet estate is one of the most renowned in Burgundy - mostly red wines, with a significant proportion of white wines: nearly 4 hectares of Chardonnay.
