Mas Saint-Louis "Grande Réserve" 2017 - Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Mas Saint Louis wines are known for their finesse; some even dare to compare them to the wines made by the famous Château Rayas. In 2015, the Bettane et Desseauve guide declared the estate "discovery of the year": "Our discovery of last year confirms this year its place (which will surprise more than one!) of future cult property of the region".
A blend typical of the appellation, this cuvée is composed of a majority of Grenache with 20% Mourvèdre. The wine is matured for 12 months in demi-muids, which follows a traditional vinification in concrete tanks.
The nose is marked by aromas of candied red fruits combined with vegetal notes evoking ferns and dried flowers. In the mouth, the palate is structured and has a nice freshness, the tannins are supple and show a certain sweetness. The finish, persistent, offers again morello cherries and red fruits.
Coming from a long line of coopers, Jean-Louis Geniest gathered in the early 1900's family lands located near the old road from Avignon to Châteauneuf du Pape. In 1909, he acquired the Maison Vigneronne located in the Clos district of Châteauneuf du Pape, to vinify the harvests from his plots of land located around the old "Mas Saint-Louis". Enlarged by his grandson Louis, then his great-grandson Jean and his wife Monique, the estate now owns 30 hectares in a single block.
The family business, which is over 100 years old, is managed today by Matthieu Faurie-Grépon, until Madame Geniest's nephew takes over the reins. The new team is keen on pursuing the effort undertaken by the previous generations, aiming for an always higher quality. It strives to work the vineyard as naturally as possible in order to sublimate the wines, of which the king grape variety is Grenache.
