Petit Sapiens 2022 - IGP Charentais Saint Sornin

Maison Soulat has taken over the Saint-Sornin winery, ravaged by hail in July 2018, with the aim of giving a new dynamic to this winery and reviving the terroir. The vineyard is part of the heritage of the Charente and it enjoys the only right on the Charentais wine territory to claim its "zoning" reference, i.e. "IGP vin Charentais - Saint-Sornin".

Petit Sapiens comes from our hillsides overlooking the Tardoire. Its name evokes the traces of our distant ancestors, found in the nearby Placard grotto, classified as a historical monument in 1989. The Gamay and Cabernet Franc are hand-harvested. This lively wine is aged in vats for 12 months, then finished in used barrels. Its production is limited to 8,000 bottles.

For more than 10 years, no production under the Saint-Sornin label had been marketed. Jacques Soulat has joined forces with Olivier Pucek on this wine project; the latter knows the terrain well: he already cultivates vines attached to the slopes of Saint-Sornin for his own wines, produced under the Maverlan label and vinified at Miaulant.

Their ambition is to restructure the historical vineyard of Saint-Sornin to produce quality wines, in an environmentally friendly way. Two wines are harvested on this exceptional terroir: Sapiens and Petit Sapiens.
